The Office meets SEO? rss

Disclosure: This is a paid review.

Number One on the Google is basically an experiment with viral video featuring a guy that I would swear is Ricky Gervais’ brother (in energy if not looks) talking about search engine optimization. It’s basically just a YouTube video talking about developing a website and ranking (you guessed it), Number One on the Google.

This video is 4 minutes and 12 seconds, but the first 4 minutes is basically some dumb guy talking about starting a website and driving traffic. The ending wraps everything up - they basically say not to be like this guy and to give them a call (Push On).

I think it’s a pretty interesting experiment - instead of following the boring old (and new) media channels, they decided to create something obviously low-budget designed to entertain. I will keep an eye on the company and see if it appears to be a successful experiment.

My only warning is that the language may be nsfw. If you like The Office (UK) and you’re looking for an SEO partner in the UK, this may be a great fit for you. If you are more interested in doing SEO on your own check out their marketing tips by email.

Renting links is unethical? rss

Lately I’ve been interviewing some local SEO’s for a search engine optimization position - basically I give the candidate a common scenario and have them make suggestions to improve the fictitious client’s ranking in the SERP’s (I just focus on Google, but you know what I mean).

Noticably absent from any of the potential hires list of seo priorities was the practice of renting links. I asked each one of them (5 guys, 1 girl so far) why they didn’t suggest any of the clients rent links and they each gave me their version of why renting links is unethical.

Is this how most people feel or is there a selection bias because I live in an area where SEO is not an everyday word? Or is it possible that I just happened to meet the 6 self-professed SEO’s who don’t practice link renting? I’m not sure but one thing is clear - I’m glad most people don’t do it - it makes it a lot cheaper for those of us who do :)
